English 12 Homework over the Winter Break:

The following work is due on the day we get back to school.  This is practice for the Provincial Exams.

1. Synthesis Essay: "The Horses" and "Vegetable Gardens on Mars".

You are to read the texts carefully and then write a synthesis essay on the following prompt: 

*Would the speaker in "The Horses" by Edwin Muir, support the technological developments in Denise Deveau's article, "Vegetable Gardens on Mars?"

This essay is an analysis of the two texts, and is not in the first person point of view.  The Synthesis Essay must have an introduction of three to five sentences, three body paragraphs of around 5-8 sentences each, which develops the synthesis, and a 4-6 sentence conclusion, that concludes the essay in an logical and appropriate way.

This essay is due on the first day back to school.

1. You are reading and developing your understanding of the story for Chapters 7 to 9. Read carefully, take good notes, and develop questions that we can share.

English 12 Homework 

Frankenstein:

1. You are to have Chapters 1 - 3 completed by Monday. 

2. You are working on Chapters 4 to 6, due November 1st.

English 12 Homework for Thursday to Thursday: TAKE GOOD NOTES

1. Read - Robert Walton's Letters

2. Read - Chapter 1-3 of "Frankenstein"

3. Answer - Questions Chapters 1-3 (Table Group)

English 12 Homework for Friday to Monday:

1. Read -  "Why Read Frankenstein?"

2. Read "Mary Shelly and Romanticsm."

3. Read "The Gothic Story" Pages 1-4.

4. Read Alistair Macleod's "Critical Evaluations."

5. Set up a"Vocabulary" document to keep up with the words you will learn.

6. Prometheus: be able to explain who Prometheus is and what he represents.

7. Read: Chronology and Introduction. 

English 12: Friday and Beyond:

1. You will come with up-to-date breaking news.

2. You will discuss "Your Smartphone" article with the class - what you learned etc.

3. You will read "Humans Are Innately Connected to Nature" by Edward O. Wilson. Look him up and be prepared to have some things to discuss.

4. Read "Learning How to Die in the Anthropocene" by Roy Scranton.

English 12 Homework for Monday, September 10:

1. You will be working on your "What Will Your Verse Be," every Tuesday and Thursday. This is a personal project where you develop your ongoing understanding of yourself - and the world - now and into the future. 

2. You will be working on the Globe and Mail article: "Your smartphone is making you stupid, antisocial and unhealthy," every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday.

This requires you to read carefully, to develop your own ideas, find appropriate examples, and express them intelligently to the class.
